ECB Rate Decisions and European Indices: What Happens at 14:15
The Orque Markets team · 3 November 2026 · 5 min read · How we write
In short
- The ECB decision comes at 14:15 Paris time, the press conference at 14:45.
- The surprise versus expectations drives the reaction more than the decision itself.
- Choose in advance: stand aside, reduce size, or wait for the press conference to end.
Eight times a year, the European Central Bank's Governing Council sets interest rates for the euro area. On those afternoons the CAC 40, the DAX and the Euro Stoxx 50 can move sharply within minutes. This article explains what happens, at what time, and how to plan around it rather than react to it.
The timetable of an ECB day (Paris time)
| Time | Event |
|---|---|
| 14:15 | Monetary policy decision published |
| 14:45 | Press conference of the ECB President begins |
| About 15:45 | Press conference ends |
Paris and Frankfurt share the same time zone, so these times are the same for the CAC 40 and the DAX. The meeting calendar is published a year in advance on the ECB's website: put the dates in your plan in January.
Why rate decisions move stock indices
Three channels are usually cited, and they can pull in different directions:
- Discount rates. Higher rates make future company earnings worth less today, which tends to weigh on valuations; lower rates tend to do the opposite.
- Sector weights. Banks can benefit from higher rates through their margins, while property and highly indebted companies tend to suffer. An index heavy in one sector reacts differently from another.
- The euro. A rate surprise moves EUR/USD; a stronger euro can weigh on exporters, which matter a lot in the DAX.
The surprise matters more than the decision itself. If a cut is fully expected, the reaction may come from the wording of the statement or the press conference instead.
What changes for an index trader
- Speed. Prices can move dozens of points in seconds after 14:15 and again during the press conference.
- Spreads. Costs often widen just before and after the release.
- Slippage. A stop can be filled beyond its level when the price jumps.
A worked example of the slippage risk:
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Size | €2 per point |
| Planned stop | 40 points = €80 |
| Fill 25 points beyond the stop | extra €50, total €130 |
Illustrative calculation, not an expectation of results.
Three written options for ECB days
Pick one before the day, not during it:
- Stand aside from 14:00 to 16:00.
- Reduce size, for example by half, and widen the stop accordingly; recalculate with the lot size calculator.
- Trade only after the press conference, once the first reaction is known.
Whichever you choose, check the trade with the risk-reward calculator and log how it went in your journal.
Do not forget the other central banks
The US Federal Reserve usually announces its decisions at 20:00 Paris time (19:00 when clocks are out of step), after the European cash close; the reaction then shows up in the opening gap the next morning. Mark both calendars, alongside the European index hours in Paris time.
Key points
ECB decision at 14:15, press conference at 14:45, eight meetings a year; the surprise drives the move; spreads and slippage rise. Decide your rule in advance. Nothing here predicts the market's reaction to any decision. Trading involves risk, and most retail traders lose money.
